Twice a year, choirmaster Chris Rowbury gathers a group of keen singers in Ipswich and they set off on an imaginary Singing Safari to collect exotic songs from around the world. The Safari lasts for six weeks and when they arrive back home, they share the songs they’ve collected with an audience. Each March they perform at St Peter’s by the Waterfront, Ipswich and each July they perform outdoors – the last two years in Holywells Park, Ipswich.
It’s amazing the sound a group of strangers can make after working together for just a few weeks. The Singing Safaris are open to anyone who loves to sing: no auditions, no experience needed, and no solos.
The winter Safari starts in January each year, and the summer Safari in June. Rehearsals are usually on Tuesdays at the Co-Op Education Centre, Fore Street, Ipswich and run from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
